Police Bosses Meet to Review Security Arrangements for August General Election

A number of police bosses led by Inspector General (IG) Joseph Boinnet on Wednesday morning held a meeting to review some of the security arrangements put in place ahead of the election.

The officers met barely a day after a section of NASA leaders claimed that some officers had been trailing its Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Among the officers involved in the discussions is the Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro, Deputy Inspector Generals Samuel Arachi (Administration) and Joel Kitili (Regular Police), and the Director-General of the National Youth Service Richard Ndubai.

Speaking after the meeting, Boinnet dismissed reports that officers with unknown motives were following Odinga since Monday as claimed by Siaya Senator James Orengo.

Boinnet challenged the Senator to report any concerns on the ODM leader's life to the police so that immediate action can be taken.

The IG further assured that the security agents were well prepared for the August General Election maintaining that they had reviewed arrangements of how they would handle the electioneering period.

“We received presentations from a multi-agency directorate put in place and I can assure you that I am satisfied with the arrangements put in place,” he stated.

To ensure that the polls will be peaceful, free and fair, Boinnet noted that they were collaborating with other agencies such as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“We are keen to build partnerships with the rest of the Kenyan populace and we’ve had a lot of engagements with actors including IEBC, the Judiciary, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to ensure that elections are held in a safe and secure environment,” he announced.

On Tuesday, Orengo alleged that eight military-trained police officers using vehicles with “non-GK” number plates that kept on changing had been trailing the NASA candidate.
