IEBC to Appeal High Court Decision to Cancel Presidential Ballot Paper Tender Awarded to Al Ghurair

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revealed its next stop regarding the presidential ballot paper tender case.

IEBC disclosed that it has ordered its legal team to appeal the ruling made by the High Court on Friday.

The court ordered that the Commission should cancel the printing of presidential election ballot papers by Dubai-based Al Ghurair firm and readvertise the tender afresh.

In a statement on Friday night, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the ruling "has far-reaching implications on the elections, given the urgency to prepare for free, fair and credible elections in the next 30 days."

National Super Alliance (NASA) had moved to court to challenge the award of the tender to Al-Ghurair, claiming that the firm had links with key individuals in the Jubilee administration.

The Opposition also argued that the tender had been awarded unfairly without following the law.

“We order that the IEBC commences the procurement process for printing of election materials for presidential elections scheduled for August 8 so as to ensure free, fair and transparent elections,” Justice Joel Ngugi stated while delivering the ruling.

Should the Commission appeal the ruling, another showdown will be inevitable just a few days to the August elections.
