Kieni Member of Parliament (MP) Kanini Kega Demands Government Vehicles After SRC Reduces Salaries

Kieni Member of Parliament (MP) Kanini Kega has made three new demands after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reduced the salaries of government officers.

First, Kega demanded that the government give them vehicles to compensate for the loss of mileage allowances.

He also asked that MPs should have personal drivers like other State officers to help ease their movement.

"Other State officers like cabinet secretaries, principal secretaries, parastatal bosses and others have GK vehicles with personal drivers. MPs’ transport should also be catered for by giving them vehicles to ease their movement," Mr Kega stated.

He added, "The move will reduce wage bill and we welcome it but they forgot to offer transport alternatives. The zoning capped by levels of kilometres will do good and save more money."

Kega, who is seeking to serve a second term on a Jubilee Party ticket also condemned the move by SRC to remove car grants for elected leaders.

The MP further demanded that the incoming 12th should not to amend the SRC proposal on salaries stating that a section of aspirants was seeking elective seats due to the high pay.

“Some positions have attracted 30 candidates because of the salaries, allowances and other good things that accompany the seats and not because they want to serve people. There is an upsurge of political aspirants and by 2022 only few people will be vying driven by people’s interest,” he observed.

SRC Chairperson Sarah Serem on Monday announced a new pay structure reducing gross salaries for all State officials.

Senators, Members of Parliament (MPs) and Woman Representatives will now take home Sh621,250 as opposed to the Sh710,000 they have been earning.
