Education CS Fred Matiang'i Directs Public Universities to Close by August 4

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has directed public universities to close by August 4 in preparation for the General Election.

Matiang'i, who was recently put in charge of the Interior Ministry on an acting capacity, advised the institutions to remain closed until the Election is concluded.

Sources privy to the order said it was issued to Vice Chancellors during a meeting of the education stakeholders held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.

According to a memo issued by the University of Nairobi (UON) Vice Chancellor, the institution will close on August 4 to allow the staff and students participate in the polls.

"This is to inform all staff that the University of Nairobi will close with effect from August 4, 2017, up to August 18, 2017 during the electioneering period," read the memo quoted by the Standard.

Other University bosses divulged that they would make the necessary arrangements to implement the directive by the Education CS.

Earlier on, Matiang'i had hinted that the school calendar would be interrupted for two weeks to allow for the election to be conducted smoothly.

At the time, he explained that the closure was meant to give room for elections to be conducted and protect students as well as property during the electioneering period.

He called on school heads across the country to take an inventory of the properties to be used by IEBC for the polls in order to keep track of them during and after the election.

This, he said would ensure that the IEBC officials would be held accountable in case of destruction or loss of school property.

The CS also called on the electoral body to declare all Primary, Secondary schools, and higher learning institutions that are expected to serve as voting centres.
