Former Internal Security Minister Waithaka Kanyi Dies

Former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tetu constituency Waithaka Kanyi has passed on.

Mr Kanyi who served as Internal Security Minister in former President Daniel Moi's administration died on Wednesday night aged 81.

According to his family, the ex-security boss died in his sleep at his Karen home after a long illness.

He is survived by two wives, with one Ann Kanyi, being the only aspirant vying for the Tetu parliamentary seat as an independent candidate.

The former Minister was elected as Tetu MP from 1988 to 1991 having earlier on served as a Councillor for Mt Kenya Hospital ward and Nyeri Mayor.

Previously, Kanyi who hails from Muthiga village also worked as a teacher and a warden at Kamiti Maximum Prison before joining politics.

Apart from serving in the Security docket, the deceased served as Information Minister before he moved to the United States in 1992.

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to lead the country in resting former powerful Cabinet Minister Nicholas Biwott who died a week ago.

Biwott is said to have collapsed in his house a few minutes after breakfast and was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His death came a few days after the abrupt and shocking demise of immediate ex-Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, who post-mortem report revealed died due to an acute heart attack.
