Court Blocks Kenya Ferry Services From Testing MV Jambo in Mombasa

Another flagship project that was set to be launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta has suffered a setback.

Mombasa High Court judge Erick Ogola barred the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) from testing a ferry procured to streamline transport services at the Coastal city. upon its arrival from Turkey.

The ferry, MV Jambo was procured at a cost of Sh1 Billion to ease transport at the Coast where frequent ferry breakdowns are common.

The issue ended in court after the firm contracted to inspect MV Jambo raised concerns over its safety.

In a suit filed in the same court, Bonriz Insurance Marine Surveyors sought to block the importation of the vessel, terming it unsafe as it did not meet all the safety standards required.

When making the determination, the judge noted that the controversial ferry was already on its way from Turkey.

During a previous visit to Mombasa, President Kenyatta had promised to ensure that a new ferry is availed to commuters.

Media reports indicated that he was set to launch the project, but this could delay due to the law suit.

Last month, a bridge that was unveiled by the Head of State collapsed barely two weeks after the launch, raising safety concerns.
