The British government has sent a warning to its citizens ahead of Kenyan elections slated for next month.
The Foreign Commonwealth Office issued a travel advisory asking British citizens to avoid political rallies in Kenya.
The UK government also advised its citizens against all but essential travel within 60 kilometres of Mandera, Garissa and Lamu counties, noting that a curfew has been imposed.
"British citizens are asked to monitor local and international media and if a demonstration or disturbance takes place, leave the area quickly.
"This curfew doesn't apply to Lamu Island, Manda Island or Pate Island,” the notice reads.
Other areas mentioned in the advisory include Tana River County and within 15 kilometres of the coast from the Tana River down to the Galana (Athi-Galana-Sabaki).
The UK advisory comes a week after the US Congress asked Kenya to ensure the elections were free, transparent and credible.
Through Representative Eliot Engel, the Congress proposed the assistance by US State Department and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in preparing for August poll.
It also proposed the participation of the civil society in ensuring a peaceful pre and post election environment in the country.
