IEBC Receives Warning Letter on Children Campaigning for Politicians

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has received a cautionary letter concerning the use of children in political campaigns.

In a letter written by the County Coordinator of Children Services (CCCS) Simeon Ogao, IEBC officials have been asked to intervene and bar politicians from luring children with money and sweets.

The Marsabit Department of Children's Services official raised the alarm on the risky practice that has seen politicians entice children to chant praise songs for their campaign rallies.

"They are also donning uniforms of political parties that include jerseys, caps and T-shirts. The conduct of politicians and candidates involved in this malpractice is of great concern because it infringes on the rights and development of the youngsters," Mr Ogao's letter explained.

The CCCS added that some children had stopped going to school citing various incidences witnessed within the county.

"These children are also being exposed to many risks as they are seen hanging precariously on vehicles being used in the campaigns," he described.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has especially been seen on several occasions hoisting up children on his campaign vehicles.
