Voters Will Not Make Phone Calls and Take Pictures Inside Polling Stations - IEBC

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has declared that voters will not be allowed to make phone calls at the polling stations.

In a series of tweets, the electoral body maintained that Kenyans will also not be allowed to take pictures inside the stations during the August polls.

According to the body, the calls will be prohibited, particularly at the polling booth, to maintain the secrecy of the ballot.

“This is for voters. No pictures and phone calls at the polling station. Particularly at the voting booth. ~ Secret ballot,” the Commission stated.

The body, however, clarified that those wishing to take pictures would be at liberty to do but outside the polling station 400-metre radius.

“Nobody is saying you cannot take your #SelfiesAFTERVoting. In fact, you can have your cell phone/camera on you at the polling station. The only request we are making is that you do not take photos or make calls within the polling station as a voter,” IEBC affirmed.

The Commission encouraged those willing to take “selfies” proving they had voted to do so but outside the polling centres.

“IEBC has no intention of curtailing your liberties. But please do respect polling station rules and other voters. You may take all the #SelfiesAFTERVoting and make your calls freely, outside of the polling station,” he stated.

The polls body has severally discouraged voters against hanging around the polling station after voting urging them to stay 400 metres away from the centres.
