Education CS Fred Matiang'i Orders Closure of KU and JKUAT Campuses in Tanzania and Rwanda

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has directed Kenyatta University (KU) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to shut down their campuses in Rwanda and Tanzania.

Matiang'i's directive comes two days after the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) blocked the two universities from admitting students in Arusha for the September intake.

The Commission noted that KU and JKUAT had failed to meet the set standards.

KU spent Sh370 Million to set up the Rwanda campus and Sh53 Million to set up the Arusha campus while JKUAT spent Sh10 Million to start the Arusha campus and Sh21 Million for the Kigali campus

On Thursday KU Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina announced plans to close down its Arusha campus.

"We received instructions on the same and KU is already working on closing the campus," Prof Wainaina stated.

In March, Kenya's Commission for University Education termed the move by public universities to invest abroad as illegal and against the Universities Act.

Parliament's Public Investments Committee (PIC) on its part tasked the Vice chancellors of KU and JKUAT to explain how they opened campuses in foreign countries without the government’s consent.
