IEBC to Announce Provisional Presidential Results

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has changed its decision on how the presidential election results will be announced.

On Tuesday, the body announced that it had done away with the periodic announcement of presidential results at the National Tallying Centre.

However, during a press conference held on Friday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that provisional results would be announced as they are received at the tallying centre.

He explained that the Commission had earlier decided to just give the final tally as received from the constituencies, but the decision was largely opposed.

“We will heed to Kenyans' wish for us to announce them as they trickle in,” he stated while giving an update of the commission's preparedness ahead of the August polls.

Chebukati affirmed that the electoral body was ready to handle the polls urging Kenyans to be vigilant and participate in ensuring the success of the polls.

“Anybody found interfering with the server will be dealt with and will face the full force of the law. We ask Kenyans not to stand aside and observe, but participate to enjoy their democracy,” he appealed.

During the previous brief, IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba had noted that the agency would only collate the figures from all the 290 constituencies and declare the final results.

Meanwhile, the body is set to conduct a nationwide dry run next week to test its electronic result transmission system.

The test will see simulation results transmitted from polling stations to the national centre at the Bomas of Kenya, an exercise that will be witnessed by the public.
