Mombasa Voter Asks Court to Bar Senator Hassan Omar's Gubernatorial Bid

With just over a week to the General Election, National Super Alliance (NASA) gubernatorial candidate Hassan Omar has been taken to court by a Mombasa voter.

The voter, Hamiliton Mwakitele Walongo filed a petition seeking to bar the Wiper Senator from vying claiming he had not resigned as a state officer before contesting for the governorship.

He faulted the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for clearing Omar without having complied with all the constitutional requirements.

In his petition, he sought to have all elected leaders contesting for gubernatorial positions to be declared ineligible.

Excluded in the case are sitting governors and members of County Assemblies.

Through his lawyer Jesse Oduor, the petitioner claimed that the Senator contravened the Electoral laws of the constitution.

Article 193 (2) (a) states that a person is disqualified from being elected a member of a county assembly if the person is a State officer or other public officer, other than a member of the county assembly.

Earlier, Omar who is Wiper Secretary General had warned Governor Ali Hassan Joho against hurling insults at President Uhuru Kenyatta in order to get sympathy votes.
