Government Threatens to Shut Down Media Houses Announcing Election Results

The Government has now threatened to shut down media houses that release election results during the August 8 General Election.

Speaking in Nyeri, ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru warned media houses against releasing results stating that they would be contradicting the Constitution.

He insisted that the only body with the mandate to announce the results was the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

IEBC had earlier changed its decision on how the presidential election results will be announced.

During a press conference held on Friday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that provisional results would be announced as they are received at the National Tallying Centre.

He explained that the Commission had earlier decided to just give the final tally as received from the constituencies, but the decision was largely opposed.

“We will heed to Kenyans' wish for us to announce them as they trickle in,” he stated while giving an update of the commission's preparedness ahead of the August polls.

Chebukati affirmed that the electoral body was ready to handle the polls urging Kenyans to be vigilant and participate in ensuring the success of the polls.

“Anybody found interfering with the server will be dealt with and will face the full force of the law. We ask Kenyans not to stand aside and observe, but participate to enjoy their democracy,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, the body is set to conduct a nationwide dry run next week to test its electronic result transmission system.
