President Uhuru Kenyatta Orders Provision of Security For IEBC Officers

President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered for the provision of security for all Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officers.

Speaking on Tuesday after the killing of the Commission's ICT Manager Chris Msando, the President also directed that presidential candidates and the running mates be provided with adequate security.

He sent his condolences to the family of Msand and Caro Ngumbu, the woman whose body was discovered a few metres from the ICT boss.

"We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of Chris Msando and Caro Ngumbu. I join in prayer with their families, and of every Kenyan of good will. Let our prayer direct our action," he stated.

The Head of State also called for speedy investigations into the official's murder condemning what he described as a sinister move to derail the August polls.

He further cautioned against speculation which he said "makes the work of investigators harder, and only adds to the pain of those who loved him."

President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto promised to have Kenya united before and after the polls calling on Kenyans to respect the outcome of the election.

"This is not the time to allow a tragedy such as this to divide us, to turn brother against brother. In the face of death, we stand strong together: so that we can mourn a patriot; so that we can

comfort his family and those he loved; and so that the ideal for which he lived— the free and fair choice of our leaders — is realised," read a statement from Kenyatta.

He was responding after IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati called on the government to secure the polls body's officials so that they deliver a credible election.

Addressing the media on Monday, Chebukati expressed concern over the death of Msando which came a week to the elections.

The Chairman asked the police to conduct immediate investigations to ensure that the killers of the former ICT boss are brought to book.

Chebukati described Msando as the most dedicated employee calling on all IEBC officers countrywide to keep calm as August 8 approaches.
