Man Shot by Police Outside Tallying Centre in South Mugirango Constituency

There was tension on Wednesday after a police officer shot dead a man at a tallying centre in Kisii County.

The incident, which occurred outside Nduru Girls’ Secondary School in South Mugirango Constituency, angered residents who temporarily barred the police from picking up the body.

According to eyewitness accounts, the police officer shot the man from the back as he was trying to quell a conflict between two other residents.

“I am still in shock. I saw it happen. Some two boys were fighting. The victim had tried to separate them, but the officer threw a tear gas canister then walked to him and shot him,” explained Evelyn Nyaboke, a resident of Etago.

Confirming the incident, Kisii County police commander Abdi Hassan stated that the officer who was manning the tallying centre had been taken into custody.

“We are probing the circumstances which led to the death of the man. We will inform public of the outcome of the case,” he disclosed.

Mr Hassan urged the residents to maintain peace as the police investigate the unfortunate incident.
