Prof Ayiecho Olweny Leading in Muhoroni Parliamentary Race Despite Not Being on Ballot Paper

Residents of Muhoroni Constituency are surprised after a candidate who was not on the ballot paper was declared the winner on the IEBC portal.

Former Assistant Minister Prof Ayiecho Olweny was declared the winner on the IEBC portal despite his name not being on the ballot.

The man who had been cleared to vie on an ODM ticket was Mr Onyango K'Oyoo and he is the one who was on the ballot paper.

IEBC, through Muhoroni returning officer, said the mistake was caused by the numerous changes made to the candidates' list.

On Sunday, Prof Olweny was still in court protesting the awarding of the ODM nomination certificate to K’Oyoo but his case was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Voters protested the mix-up but it appears there was a slight problem with the system since by Thursday noon, Olweny was still leading.

Voters threatened to storm the constituency tallying centre after it emerged that K'Oyoo's votes were awarded to Olweny.

Returning Officer Alice Cheruiyot said the mistake was caused by the numerous changes made to the candidates' list.

"When the ruling that confirmed K'Oyoo's candidature was made, the KIEMS system had been configured to show that the ODM candidate was Olweny.

Hence the results reflected in Olweny's name," said Cheruiyot.

She assured the MP and his supporters that there was no cause for alarm as the mistake was being rectified.
