Bishop Gilbert Deya Demands VIP Treatment at Kamiti Maximum Prison

Bishop Gilbert Deya, who is remanded at the Kamiti Maximum Prison, has demanded VIP treatment for the remainder of his stay at the prison.

The controversial preacher appeared in court on Thursday and complained of the poor conditions he had been subjected to in the holding facility.

Through his lawyer, Mr John Swanka, Deya branded the cells as pathetic and not fit for human habitation.

The preacher protested not being allowed to leave his cell from 7 pm until the next morning as well as having to use a bucket as a toilet.

"Because there are no washrooms, he has to use a bucket and keep it in his room till morning. He is made to wash the bucket with his bare hands.

"The single room cell is extremely dirty and the mattress has bugs which have been biting my client since August 4," the lawyer decried.

The lawyer outlined that the terms agreed between Britain and Kenya before his deportation provided that, should Deya be remanded, the preacher would be housed in the special unit at the prison.

Speaking for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr Nicholus Mutuku explained that the deal did not specify the conditions in which the special unit would be in.

"What was promised was a single cell, which he would occupy alone if remanded. The same applies to him if he is imprisoned. As regards other conditions, owing to silence of the assurance, it means they will depend on what other remandees enjoy," Mutuku explained.

A final ruling on his plea for bail will be made on Friday.
