Aden Duale Announces MPs to Be Sworn In on August 22

Members of the 12th Parliament will be officially sworn in on August 22, outgoing Majority Leader Aden Duale has conveyed.

The House will also proceed to choose the Speaker of the assembly soon after the newly-elected Members of Parliament take the oath.

"The only business we will conduct next week is swearing in of MPs and election of Speaker and his deputy. After that, the MPs will proceed for an induction.

"The MPs will decide who they want to be their Speaker, Deputy Speaker and other House leadership positions. In my opinion, the previous leaders performed well and should be retained," Duale suggested.

The re-elected Garissa Township MP added that the special sitting will be convened soon after President Uhuru Kenyatta is sworn in.

President Kenyatta will be sworn in for his second and last term in office on August 29 if his victory is not challenged in the Supreme Court.

According to the law, the President-elect and his deputy William Ruto are to be inaugurated on the Tuesday following the 14th date of the declaration of presidential election results, if no petition is filed.

The special parliamentary session will entail a maiden speech from the second term Head of State.

Mr Duale is confident that the Jubilee Party, having garnered a majority of the parliamentary and Senate seats, is set to comfortably control the 12th parliament.

"People accused us of having tyranny of numbers in the last Parliament. I don’t know what they will say this time because we have been given more tyranny of members by the electorate. My work this time will even be easier," Duale told journalists.
