EACC Gives Newly Elected Governors Order to Execute After Swearing In

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has mandated newly-elected governors to conduct an audit of the previous regime in their counties as soon as they are sworn in.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, EACC Chairperson Eliud Wabukala, called on the top county chiefs to execute the task as a show of commitment to eradicating corruption.

"The Commission advises all candidates particularly Governors that, once they are sworn in, to ensure that mechanisms are established and/or strengthened in their respective entities," he stated.

The chairperson added that the Governors will be required to sign the Specific Leadership and Integrity Code as required by the law.

In outlining the Commission's observations of the just concluded General Election, Wabukala conveyed that they had noted 26 isolated cases of voter bribery in Garissa, Meru, Nyamira, Wajir, Busia and Machakos counties.

"Seven cases were handled by the police, one case was referred to the Ministry of Interior, two were being pursued by the Commission and the remaining 16 remained unsubstantiated," the Chairperson explained.

Wabukala reiterated sentiments by Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri that investigations would continue for outgoing governors implicated in corruption scandals.

All the Governor-elects are expected to be sworn in before August 22.

According to a circular given to the media, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua will be the first to be sworn in on 17th August at Kenyatta stadium followed by  Embu Governor Martin Wambora the following day at Embu stadium.
