The United States has responded to Opposition leader Raila Odinga's decision to challenge the presidential results in the Supreme Court.
Issuing a statement on Thursday in Nairobi, the US embassy welcomed the move by the NASA leader citing that the Courts were the constitutional venue to address election disputes.
The Embassy added that it was optimistic that the Supreme Court would address the Opposition's complaints in a manner that was in accordance with the rule of law.
“As a long-time friend, the United States continues to follow closely Kenya’s presidential election process. We welcome the decision by Kenya’s opposition alliance,” it stated.
The US further expressed its disappointment in the violent manner the police handled the protests that erupted after the announcement of the presidential results.
“We were deeply troubled by the reports of deaths and injuries that followed the IEBC’s August 11 announcement of the election results. We urge security services to avoid using excessive force and to protect lives and property,” the statement added.
It concluded by condemning the threatening of deregistering civil society organizations and asked the government to protect journalists from harassment.
On Wednesday, the former Prime Minister declared that he would move to the Supreme court to challenge President Uhuru Kenyatta's win.
"We have now decided to move to the supreme court and lay in front of the world the making of a computer generated elections," part of the NASA statement titled: "Kenyans say no to computer generated leaders", read in part.
