Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko Demands to Have His Men on Swearing In Committeee

Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko and his team are currently locked in a battle with the county's Assumption of Office of the Governor Committee.

Sonko has demanded that his team be included in the Committee which is currently operated and composed of outgoing Governor Evans Kidero's men.

The Committee is charged with the mandate to ensure a smooth transition between the two administrations as well as the swearing-in ceremony.

In a court case on Friday, Sonko's lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui asked the court to compel Dr Kidero to name three individuals to work with the three appointed by the Governor-elect.

Sonko's team claims that the three appointed committee members are not sufficient and more members need to be enjoined.

Dr Kidero's team, however, maintains that the committee, which was formed a month ago to oversee the handover, should remain as it is.

Mr Kinyanjui argued that their transition committee would be responsible to oversee the proper documentation of liabilities and debts left by the outgoing county government.

"We need an independent committee that is not headed by the Ministry of Devolution to look into the nitty gritty of the transition especially on liabilities and assets," Kinyanjui stated.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, however, listed the documenting of a county’s assets, loans and unpaid bills as among the roles of the Assumption of Office Committee.

The fight for supremacy continues as Nairobi Chief of staff George Wainaina leads the Kidero team while lawyer Lydia Kwamboka leads Sonko's team, both having started meetings concerning the transition.
