American Arrested in Meru Over Terror Links

The Kenya Police have arrested an American and two other Kenyans over terror links in Meru County.

47-year-old Abdi Korad, a holder of a US passport, was arrested together with a 62-year-old Kenyan Mohammed Ismael.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the two were attempting to recruit youth in the region into an unspecified terrorist organisation.

According to Mr Abdi's passport, he was visiting Kenya for a period of three months and his visa was due on October 26.

As per a report seen by the Nation, the Ismael is a former Kenya Army sergeant since he was in possession of a certificate of service of Kenya armed forces and a post blast examination Manual.

Additional information showed that the suspects are believed to have been on a mission of recruiting youth to join a terrorist group and had identified one target and started to recruit him.

A 23-year-old man from Mikinduri area in Meru County was also apprehended being suspected to have been the recruit.

The suspects, however, denied the terror links claiming that they were just travellers who were looking for potatoes to buy.
