Human Rights Activist Maina Kiai Detained at JKIA

Human rights activist Maina Kiai was on Sunday morning detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for allegedly lacking necessary clearance.

Mr Kiai was scheduled to leave the country at 7:50 am but immigration officials refused to stamp his passport demanding for a travel clearance.

The immigration supervisor at the airport Nancy Nganga didn't state why Kiai needed clearance yet he isn't a government official.

The Government requires all senior officials to seek clearance before leaving the country.

The activist was later allowed to leave.

The move to detain him comes amidst heated wars between civil society groups and the government over allegations that the activist groups were operating illegally.

Last week, the NGOs Coordination Board deregistered the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Africa Centre for Open Governance (AfriCOG).

Acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i intervened quashing the suspension for 90 days to allow for consultations.

Mr Kiai is a Board member at KHRC.
