West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo Fires All County Casual Workers

West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo has fired all casual labourers working for the County and sent top officers on compulsory leave ahead of a special financial and human resource audit starting Monday.

Speaking during a press conference on Friday, Lonyangapuo stated that he does not want to inherit a county government "rotten with huge debts".

“All casual workers are laid off except those assigned to the health department, sanitation and revenue collection.

"The office of the Auditor General will help us in the audit process," he remarked.

Those sent on leave include the acting County Secretary, all chief officers, directors and administrators, departmental heads and sub-county revenue officers.

The Governor said this is in line with the code of regulations of 2006, section N18 of the County Government Act.

“These measures are being undertaken to ensure our county has a public service that is effective and efficient in its operations and service delivery," the Governor stated.

He added that they will conduct a thorough audit of all contractors, bursary allocations and the revenue collection system to seal any loopholes.

“We want to ensure West Pokot residents get value for their money.

"My government will not allow a few individuals to enrich themselves using government resources,” he added.

The county boss further said legal action will be taken against any contractor or government worker found to have colluded with others to embezzle funds.

He assured staff who have been sent on special leave that his government will treat them fairly, professionally and lawfully.

“There will be no collective punishment. Those found implicated will face the law individually," Prof. Lonyangapuo stated.

Several Governors have taken drastic measures following their inauguration including; Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) and Stephen Sang (Nandi).
