Cabinet Secretaries to Get Sh14 Million Sendoff Pay

Cabinet Secretaries who have served in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government since 2013 are set to walk away with Sh14.6 Million each in gratuity payment when a new government is formed.

The CSs include; Henry Rotich (National Treasury), Raychelle Omamo (Defence), James Macharia (Health), Amina Mohamed (Foreign Affairs), Fred Matiang’i (Education), Jacob Kaimenyi (Lands) and Phylis Kandie (East African Affairs).

Principal Secretaries (PSs) – who are the administrative heads at each State department – have also earned handsome exit packages of Sh11.8 Million each.

Taxpayers will fork out approximately Sh208.2 Million to finance the send-off packages for the 19- member Cabinet, and a further Sh365.5 Million for the 41 PSs.

Those who took office in December 2015 following a reshuffle such as Charles Keter, Willy Bett, Sicily Kariuki, Joe Mucheru, Dan Kazungu, Cleopa Mailu, and Mwangi Kiunjuri will get a farewell package of Sh5.7 Million each.

Water and Irrigation Secretary Eugene Wamalwa will take home more than Sh6.9 Million in gratuity having taken oath of office in July 2015.

PSs who have served consistently since July 2013, including Belio Kipsang (Education), Joseph Njoroge (Energy), Mariamu El Maawy (Land) and Mwanamaka Amani Mabruki, will away with Sh11.8 Million cheques each. 

In July this year, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reviewed salaries of various State officers including the president.

Under the new structure released by SRC Chair Sarah Serem, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto were set to earn a monthly gross of Sh1.4 Million and Sh1.2 Million respectively down from Sh1.6 Million and Sh1.4 Million.

Cabinet Secretaries would earn fixed salaries of Sh924,000 down from Sh1.056 Million.

Permanent Secretaries, on the other hand, would earn Sh765,000 from Sh 874,500.
