22 Election Petitions to Be Decided Within 6 Months

The Judiciary has announced that more than 20 cases arising from the concluded General Election have been filed in various courts.

In a statement sent on Monday, the Judiciary divulged that it had received one petition for the governorship, one for the senatorial position, one for the Presidency and 20 for ward representative seats.

The body further stated that the all the cases apart from the presidential one would be decided within six months from the time of filing.

"Any persons intending to contest the results of the election is required to file the election petitions within 28 days of the date of declaration,” read part of the statement.

It further indicated that the ward representative petitions would be handled by the magistrate courts in the regions they are filed while gubernatorial and senatorial ones would be heard by the High Court.

The governorship case was filed at the Embu High Court on Friday by former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti who lost the gubernatorial contest to incumbent Martin Wambora.

Kivuti had earlier on attempted to block the swearing in of Wambora through the same court but withdrew the case after he was unable to serve the respondent.

Elsewhere, the Kirinyaga court is handling the senatorial petition which was filed to contest independent candidate Charles Kibiru's win.

The other areas where ward representative petitions have been filed include Nakuru (one), Wajir (three), Hamisi (one) Kakamega (three), Kwale (one), Lamu (one), Marimanti (one), Kericho (one), Kapsabet (one), Kilgoris (one), Kisii (two), Kisumu (one), Garissa (three) and Kitui (one).
