NASA Leader Raila Odinga Says 14-Day Period for Presidential Election Period Not Sufficient

National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga has complained that the 14-day period allocated to the hearing and determination of the presidential election petition is not sufficient.

Through his lawyer, Nyamira Senator Okong'o Omogeni, Mr Odinga on Monday called for a review of the time span beginning with the seven days allocated for the filing of the petition.

Earlier in his submission to the Supreme Court, Lawyer Omogeni accused three cabinet secretaries of using their office to campaign for President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2017 General Election.

Cabinet Secretaries Eugene Wamalwa (Water), Mwangi Kiunjuri (Devolution) and Joe Mucheru (ICT) were accused of displaying bias and in some instances intimidating voters to vote for the Jubilee Party.

"In an affidavit filed on 25th August 2017, I submitted that bribery, improper and undue influence, intimidation and, by large, corruption, was used to coerce the electorate for the advantage of the third respondent," Omogeni told the court.

According to the 2010 Constitution, the President-elect should be sworn in 14 days after the declaration of results, if the election outcome is not challenged in court.

With the NASA petition on trial, the Supreme court has until September 1 to deliver its ruling, without fail.

Should the results be upheld by the court, President Kenyatta will be constitutionally sworn in on September 8.
