The Jubilee Parliamentary Group is today set to meet with their party leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta, at State House ahead of the 12th Parliament’s first sitting tomorrow.
The meeting, which Deputy President William Ruto is as well scheduled to attend, is expected to confirm appointments to various positions in the houses.
Jubilee won a clear majority in both houses, giving them the biggest say as to who takes up the positions of speakers in the bicameral house.
The convention is expected to rubber stamp Justin Muturi’s second stint as house speaker.
Ekwee Ethuro’s fate as Senate Speaker, however, seems sealed with ex-Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka tipped to take over the post, a reward for his efforts in the Jubilee campaign in Western Kenya.
Garissa Township MP Aden Duale and Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki are expected to retain their positions in the previous house as Majority leaders in Parliament and the Senate respectively.
They are also expected to agree on who to front as Chief Whips, Deputy Majority Leaders and Deputy Speakers.
Uhuru caused an online stir on Tuesday when he posted images of himself and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta exploring Kenya’s flora and fauna.
He captioned the images: "Sharing some moments with our magnificent national heritage as we await the conclusion of the judicial process. Keep the peace".
His hang-out with elephants came in the middle of Presidential Petition hearings at the Supreme Court where NASA is challenging his re-election. A ruling is expected on the 1st of September.
As for Parliament’s first sitting tomorrow, it remains unclear whether NASA-allied MPs will attend.
After earlier promising to boycott the sitting as they await the results of the petition, the lawmakers have been sending mixed signals after a number of them showed up for orientation at Parliament buildings yesterday.
The highly anticipated session will see lawmakers sworn in after which they can participate in the election of speakers.
