NASA Leaders to Hold Parliamentary Group Meeting to Deliberate on MPs Boycotting Swearing-in

Anxiety is high ahead of a meeting called by the National Super Alliance (NASA) leadership led by Raila Odinga at the Okoa Kenya offices in Nairobi.

Mr Odinga is expected to be joined by his co-principals and all NASA parliamentarians to deliberate on the way forward regarding the Coalition's position concerning the resumption of Parliament.

Reports indicate that the main agenda of the Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting will be to decide on whether they should boycott tomorrow's first sitting of the 12th Parliament.

The PG comes even as Legislators allied to NASA have expressed different opinions regarding the call to boycott the sitting.

Last week, a group of MPs led by Suna East lawmaker Junet Mohamed declared that they would stay away from the House and the election of the Speaker until matters surrounding President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election are heard and credibly determined.

Legislators Aisha Jumwa (Malindi) and Wafula Wamunyinyi (Kanduyi), however, noted that they would attend the sitting as they had not received official communication from the coalition.

“It has not been circulated to us that the boycott issue is a coalition position, we will just ignore it and move forward,” Jumwa told the media at Parliament Buildings.

Wamunyinyi on his part noted that his party (Ford Kenya) had not discussed anything to that effect.

“We are ready to take office on Thursday; the boycott threat should be treated as such. The opening of Parliament is a constitutional matter which should not be politicised,” he stated.

In the event that the coalition agrees not to boycott the sitting, the leaders will be expected to nominate candidates for the positions of Speaker and National Assembly Committee heads and members.

Meanwhile, President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto are also expected to hold a meeting at State House with all Jubilee elected MPs to discuss on nominees for the various House positions.

Parliament is set to resume tomorrow with the main agenda being the election of House Speakers and swearing-in of the MPs.
