7 Nairobi County Employees Arrested and Taken to Court

Seven Nairobi County Employees were arrested on Tuesday after Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko filed a complaint.

The seven, a chief cashier, finance officer, head of treasury, head of revenue, in-charge of bank reconciliations and assistant cashier, were accused of abuse of office.

They were identified as Reuben Gachukia, Luke Gatimu, Maurice Ochieng, Nixon Awuor, Shaban Asman, Bedan Wambui and Chrispin Oyiro.

They had earlier on been found in possession of Sh7,803,876 in their offices, which ought to have been deposited by close of business on August 22.

The suspects were arraigned in court on Wednesday before Resident Magistrate Sinkian Tobiko where investigating officers asked the court to detain them for five more days.

The officers told the Court that investigations were still ongoing and that revenue collection books, banking records, banking slips and computers were yet to be recovered as vital evidence in the case.

The court is set to give directions later on Wednesday.

Last week, Sonko made a surprise visit to the cash office at City Hall and discovered that the previous day's collections in excess of Sh7 Million in cash were lying with the cashiers by 11 am, though all cheques had been banked.

The Governor explained that he had given clear instructions for the cash office to immediately install CCTV cameras which would be monitored by his office, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
