Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Conducts Operation at City County Cash Office

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday morning made a surprise visit to the cash office at City Hall.

Following the operation, the Governor was left angry after he discovered that Tuesday's collections in excess of Sh7 Million in cash were lying with the cashiers by 11:00 am though all cheques had been banked.

"I have personally just led a sting operation at the County Cash Office, City Hall after a tip-off from an anonymous source.

"It's unacceptable that yesterdays collections of Ksh7 M (cash) were still with the cashiers by 11:00 AM yet the bank is only 50 meters away," Sonko stated.

The Governor noted that under his watch, City Hall would cease being "anyone's cash cow" as he shall streamline revenue collection and management in line with the set laws.

Sonko explained that he had given clear instructions that the cash office should immediately install CCTV cameras which would be monitored by his office, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

The operation comes just a few hours after Governor Sonko suspended members of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company board following a one-week workers' strike that has caused a water shortage in the City.

During his inauguration, the Governor promised to fight and ensure all cartels in the city are effectively dealt with.
