Police Given 3 Orders Ahead of Supreme Court Ruling on NASA Petition

Police officers have been ordered to conduct anti-riot drills ahead of Supreme Court’s ruling on the National Super Alliance (NASA) petition on Friday.

In an internal memo, police commanders in specific parts of the country have been asked to recall their juniours who are on leave or off duty.

The officers were also asked to ensure members of all ranks remain at their work stations during and after the ruling.

Some officers stated that the move was aimed at containing any form of violence that may erupt depending on the nature of the ruling.

On Tuesday, Supreme Court judges completed their hearing of the petition filed by NASA to challenge President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in the August 2017 elections.

After hearing closing arguments from lawyers representing NASA's Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and President Kenyatta, Chief Justice David Maraga stated the judgement would be delivered on Friday.

On Tuesday, the court was handed reports from the Supreme Court registrar and a panel of IT experts appointed by the court to conduct a scrutiny of the IEBC servers and other election materials.

In his final submission, NASA's Lawyer, Siaya Senator James Orengo said the reports revealed a number of irregularities, pointing to a number of unsigned forms 34A and 34 B.

Lawyers representing  IEBC and Kenyatta, however, argued that the reports validated their argument that the vote was free and fair.
