The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has issued a new statement to all teachers pulling back the strike notice it had released last week.
In a statement released on Wednesday, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion stated that the Union and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) had reached an agreement over the disputed pay rise.
"We now ask our members to continue with their work and continue supporting the union, but more importantly, cooperate with TSC and the ministry so that this year’s exam is conducted and concluded successfully,” he noted.
Last week, the Union accused TSC of scrapping the annual salary increment of teachers contrary to the existing terms of an agreement that grants every teacher a pay increase.
KNUT threatened to call for a nationwide strike in seven days if TSC did not reinstate annual pay increase.
TSC, however, assured the teachers union of the continual pay rise as provided in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed by the teachers union and the Commission last year.
“TSC has confirmed to us that the annual increment has been reinstated and we are happy, and we have forthwith withdrawn our strike notice because it has been overtaken by events," the Secretary General stated.
Mr Sossion went ahead to applaud the teachers' employer for giving the issue the due attention it deserved.
He further assured KNUT members that the union would sort any matters that will arise in future through amicable engagement with TSC.
In other issues regarding education, the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) has raised a red flag over pirated mathematical log tables that have flooded the country.
The fake books could have adverse effects on the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results for students.
