Police in Kirinyaga have arrested seven suspected gang members believed to be carrying out criminal activities in Kirinyaga East and Mwea East sub-counties.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) announced that the crackdown happened on September 12, 2025, during a major operation in the two sub-counties.

The police, during the search, found the suspects hiding in the Maisha Kamili area of Kutus town.

During the arrest, the police also found tools for breaking into houses, as well as knives and machetes.

“A major crackdown in Kutus town on September 12, 2025, saw police from Kirinyaga East and Mwea East sub-counties arrest seven suspected gang members hiding in the Maisha Kamili area, where housebreaking tools, knives and pangas were seized,” the police statement reads.

The police stated that the individuals were then taken to a police station to await arraignment and face charges.

The public is urged to keep sharing information about crimes, the police said, adding that this will work to fight crimes in the county.

“The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to sustaining such operations to dismantle criminal gangs and safeguard communities,” it stated.

The arrest came days after at least 300 suspects were arrested in Nairobi in connection with a recent surge in robberies and muggings in the Central Business District (CBD).

Police urged the victims of crimes to come forward and provide statements to support investigations as the suspects are to face charges in court.

Police and the Nairobi County government led a coordinated nationwide crackdown to restore safety in Nairobi's CBD.

In addition, Governor Johnson Sakaja has encouraged residents to report crimes directly through a toll-free number.
