The County Government of Siaya County has fired 385 health workers believed to have been hired with forged documents.
The county alleged that the workers were hired to work in the County health department without proper documentation.
County Public Service Board Chief Executive Officer, Wilfred Nyagudi, said that the mass firing came after inconsistencies were found in their reference letters.
“We noted several issues. Some of them were inconsistencies in the sequence of reference letters. Any letter we issue, such as deployments, must be signed by the chief of health. We had cases where somebody had a deployment letter dated earlier than their appointment,” said Nyagudi.
At a meeting between the workers and the county officials, only 120 health workers were informed that they are eligible employees.
The remaining employees were told not to report to work again while the issues surrounding their salaries remain unclear.
One of the employees present in the meeting said that the names of the 120 employees were read to them by Nyagudi at the September 12, 2025, meeting.
It is reported that the County Secretary, Joseph Ogutu, was also present at that meeting.
According to Emily Nabwala Anyango, one of the affected workers, they received an employment letter in December instructing them to report in January.
She added that they were placed on a six-month probationary period as their documents were verified by the relevant bodies.
“Employment letters were given to us in December, and we reported in January. We have been diligent, we have been working."
"There is also a six-month probation period before confirmation into the system, and during that time, documents are supposed to be verified by the relevant bodies. That process was done,” Anyango said.
