Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino caused drama at parliament during his swearing-in speech after he added some characteristic flair to the written oath.
Babu swore allegiance to the people of Kenya and NASA leader Raila Odinga, and ended his speech with ‘Tibim!’ the campaign term he helped popularize.
“I, Babu Owino, having been elected a Member of Parliament do swear in the name of Almighty God that I would bear true faith and allegiance to the people of the Republic of Kenya and Raila Odinga that I will obey, respect, uphold, preserve, protect and defend this Constitution of the Republic of Kenya and that I would faithfully and consciously discharge the duties of the Member of Parliament, so help me God. Thank you. Tibim!”
The National Assembly Clerk was forced to ask the former student leader to retake the oath, which he did. Babu Owino is among a crop of new faces expected to light up the 12th parliament.
He was elected on an ODM Party ticket and has already proven how much of a staunch Raila Odinga supporter he is.
Other new prominent figures in the 12th Parliament include investigative journalist Mohammed Ali, and renowned artist Charles Kanyi aka Jaguar.
