Siaya Senator James Orengo Demands for Disbandment of IEBC

Siaya Senator and lawyer James Orengo, who was representing opposition leader Raila Odinga in the presidential petition, has stated that they cannot trust the current Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct elections again.

Speaking after the nullification of President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election, Orengo thanked the Supreme Court for giving a fair decision saying "impunity must be punished".

Orengo stated that it was the first time a Supreme Court had overturned a presidential election in Kenya, terming it a landmark ruling.

The Supreme Court on Friday announced that the election of President Kenyatta was null and void noting that there were irregularities that affected the results of the election.

It, however, stated that Kenyatta did not participate in any malpractice.

The court ordered fresh elections in 60 days but stated that the parties involved would have to incur the expenses of the process.

One of President Uhuru Kenyatta's lawyer, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, claimed the decision made by the court was political and Kenyatta would still emerge victorious after fresh elections.

"Elections are about numbers and this time the margin will even be bigger," remarked Ahmednasir.
