IEBC Announces New Election Date for Kitutu-Chache Constituency

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a Gazette notice of an election for Kitutu Chache South Constituency scheduling it for November 7th, 2017.

This is after the demise of Jubilee Party parliamentary candidate  Mr Leonard Gwaro in July, just three weeks before the elections.

The late Gwaro died in a fatal car crash after the Toyota Prado they were traveling in veered off the road at Nyakoe Market along Kisii-Kisumu road.

At the time, IEBC spokesman Andrew Limo said the commission would deliberate on the way forward.

"The law is clear in the case of the presidential election since it states that it should be postponed in such circumstances.

"The commission will make a decision on whether this applies to other elective positions or the affected may just be told to give a replacement," Mr Limo said in a statement.

The Electoral body is, however, still racing against time to announce the next date for the Presidential election after the annulment of President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election by the Supreme Court.

According to the constitution, fresh elections should be conducted exactly 60 days after the court ruling, meaning the IEBC needs to announce the election date as soon as possible.

Members of the opposition have, however, demanded the removal of the poll body saying they cannot be trusted after what they termed as a 'shambolic electoral process.'

Meanwhile, Education CS Fred Matiang'i has asked the poll body to have the elections a week before October 17, to allow for preparations of this year's KCSE exam.
