Nairobi County Daily Revenue Has Risen to Sh38 Million - Mike Sonko

Less than a month after being sworn into office, Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has announced that the daily revenue collections at City Hall have increased from Sh7 Million to Sh38.2 Million, an over 500 percent rise.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Sonko stated that the rapid rise in the income was realised today at the Nairobi County cash office during a joint operation where he was accompanied by Jubilee Party majority leader and ODM minority leader.

"After spending several hours at the cash office instructing tax payers to be paying directly to the bank in case there was a system failure we have managed to record 38 million shillings," he stated.

He also noted that the collections were made through the 14 digitised revenue streams out of the 138 sources of income for the County, adding that he would ensure that all the sources of revenue are digitized.

The Governor further warned motorists who have been evading payment of parking fees and bribing the parking attendants.

"I am urging such drivers to comply with the county laws by paying for parking through the electronic EJijiPAY service which can be accessed by dialing *217#," he stated

"Failure to comply will lead to impounding of noncompliant vehicles," he noted.

Mr Sonko pointed out that the county government aims to seal the loopholes through which the county revenue has been lost in a bid to transform and restore Nairobi's lost glory.

The former Nairobi Senator further cited the impromptu sting operations he leads as the cause of the rising daily collections.

On August 23, Sonko stormed the cash office at City Hall and found an unbanked Sh7 Million which was the previous day's collection.

He instructed officials to immediately install CCTV cameras at the cash office adding that his office, the DCI and NIS would monitor activities at City Hall.
