Girl Linked to Moi Girls School Fire Charged With 9 Counts of Murder

The Nairobi Children's Court has ruled to free the student accused of having started the deadly inferno that killed nine students at Moi Girls School, Nairobi.

In a ruling passed on Wednesday, Senior Principal Magistrate Teresia Nyangena released the girl on a cash bail of Sh200,000.

The Court, however, set out strict conditions for the girl's release.

The student was charged with nine counts of murder after she was found culpable for having planned the tragic fire that caused the death of nine Form 1 girls.

Police investigations showed that the girl, along with four others, planned the attack on a WhatsApp group.

A thread of messages from the five participants shows the main suspect as having been the most vocal regarding the plan, which she said she wanted to execute after failing to be transferred from the school.

“I will burn the school because my parents refused to take me to (names preferred schools). I want to do something that will shock them,” one of the messages was quoted by Capital FM News.

The probe further revealed that the initial plan was to torch the dormitory on August 31 but it was aborted because “there were a lot of movements that night.”
