Fred Matiang'i Makes New Announcement on October Elections

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has assured that the government will provide security to all senior IEBC staff and Returning Officers involved in the upcoming October elections.

Addressing the media on Thursday from Mombasa, Dr Matiang'i stated that security agencies were ready to deal with any eventualities during the fresh presidential polls.

"We are providing security for the senior staff at the IEBC as well as the 290 returning officers," he conveyed, adding that all polling stations would be secured.

"We have a national security plan to ensure the country is secure and safe just like during the August polls. We will do it yet again much better and stronger because we are only dealing with one election," he affirmed.

The acting Interior CS elaborated that they would apprehend any leaders found propagating hate speech or engaging in unlawful activities.

Meanwhile, the European Union observers have issued a list of conditions the Kenyan Government should meet before the polls.

The Election Observation Mission on Thursday divulged that it had been invited to monitor the repeat election with the aim of increasing electoral integrity and improving the overall process.

In the upcoming poll, the Mission observed that it was committed to impartiality and independence, does not favour any particular outcome and will work to support the fulfilment of citizens’ political rights.
