Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the Senate.
Prof Kindiki garnered 38 votes defeating Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina who got 17 votes.
The Tharaka Nithi Senator, who served as the leader of the Majority in the last Senate, was endorsed by President Uhuru Kenyatta during a Jubilee Party Parliamentary Group meeting.
He will deputise former Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka who was elected Senate Speaker after securing 42 out of 67 votes.
According to the Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye, a total of five Senators including Uasin Gishu County's Margaret Kamar picked nomination papers for the deputy Speaker seat.
However, only Prof Kindiki and Ole Kina beat the deadline for interested candidates to return their nomination papers.
