Presbyterian University of East Africa Shuts Down Nairobi Campus

The Presbyterian University of East Africa (PUEA) has shut down its Nairobi campus after the Commission for University Education (CUE) gave the institution tough guidelines on setting up campuses.

PUEA Vice-Chancellor John Mungania stated that the students who were affected by the directive had been transferred to the institution's main campus.

Mr Mungania admitted that the university could not meet the guidelines of setting up the campus in an interview with the Nation on Thursday.

"We needed adequate space and land. We have addressed the welfare of the affected students," he stated.

Last week, the Commission for University Education (CUE) directed three private universities to prepare a detailed report to guide an audit to be carried out in coming days.

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Presbyterian University of East Africa and Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) were set to undergo audits to test compliance with the agency’s rules.

“We are just going to cross check if they are doing the right things,” said CUE chairman Prof Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha last week.

Earlier this week, Law students who graduated from Makerere University were sent into panic mode after the Council of Legal Education (CLE) stated that the students would have to produce certified academic papers before enrolling for this year's bar examinations in Kenya.

Reports indicated that degrees issued by the institution since 2011 were being investigated.

In May, Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) closed three of its campuses and sacked over 150 employees, in what was cited as ‘dynamics affecting the education sector in the entire Kenyan economy’.

The campuses affected by the closure included those in Kisii, Nyeri and Nakuru and affected students were taken in by the main campus in Meru.
