Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's Announcement on Matatu Ban in CBD

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced that the County will employ 1,000 marshals to enforce the ban on all matatus carrying less than 60 passengers from the Central Business District (CBD).

In a statement issued on Saturday, Mr Sonko stated: "In the spirit of inclusion and participation, my administration will be employing over 1,000 Traffic Marshalls in the next month."

The Nairobi Governor noted that the current matatu crew operators who manage the terminus within the city would be given priority in job selection.

"This is primarily to ensure self-regulation within the industry while guaranteeing minimal economic displacement for them," he noted.

Sonko also pointed out that those employed will be uniformed and trained to facilitate the smooth flow of vehicles.

"Under this new framework, it will be easy to identify those who fail to comply with the new regulations.

"This is only going to be possible by all players agreeing to cooperate to adopt a new way of operating, especially in the way passengers are picked and dropped, which contributes to nearly half of the traffic snarl-ups in the CBD," part of the statement read.

Meanwhile, the matatu owners led by Matatu Owners Association chair Simon Kimutai have dismissed the gazette notice blocking PSV's from accessing CBD.

"The ban is uncalled for and very unreasonable. It is not possible, and we shall not move an inch unless we are consulted," Mr Kimutai noted.
