Chebukati Set To Announce Shake-Up At IEBC Before October Elections

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is this week expected to unveil a new team tasked with managing the fresh elections scheduled for October 17th.

A Project team that will report to a steering committee headed by Mr Chebukati will oversee the fresh poll, while the IEBC Secretariat will also have 'administrative roles' to play.

This follows a retreat by the commission in Naivasha last week where they struck a compromise on the roles they will play in the fresh polls, following a very public rift between a section of the commission and the secretariat.

Wafula Chebukati had initially announced the formation of a project team to handle the polls, sidelining the electoral body's secretariat led by Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Ezra Chiloba.

This came in the wake of a leaked memo from Chebukati to Chiloba where the Chairperson demanded answers to a raft of tough questions on the handling of the August 8th election.

The new arrangement will see Deputy CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan take on the position of Project Coordinator with Dr Sidney Namulungu also on the team. In charge of logistics will be Nancy Kariuki.

Bernard Misati Moseti will be in charge of training, while Albert Gogo will head up the ICT department working directly under Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

Salome Oyugi will take over legal services with Silas Rotich put in charge of the National Tallying Centre.

A joint meeting with Jubilee and the National Super Alliance(NASA) leaders is expected to take place before the announcement is made officially.

NASA had asserted that there will not be an election without structural and personnel changes at the electoral body, specifically demanding for the removal and prosecution of Chief Executive Ezra Chiloba and five other secretariat officials.
