IEBC Faced With Major Hurdle Ahead Of Fresh Election

The Independent Electoral And Boundaries Commission (IEBC) may be forced to postpone the fresh elections currently scheduled for October 17th, after encountering a serious hurdle with the French company whose technology powered the Kenya Integrated Election Management Systems (KIEMS).

A delegation from OT Morpho led by Chief Executive Anne Bouverot has been in meetings with the electoral body over the past week after it emerged that the company has admitted that it may be unable to upgrade the Voter Transmission System by the set date.

The Standard reports that the company faces the challenge of upgrading the system without losing data from the August 8th polls.

In any case, the election has to be held by October 1st, in line with the court ruling from the Supreme Court that nullified Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election.

On Friday, President Uhuru led leaders from the greater Central region in making what they called 'The Sagana Declaration' , where they stipulated that they would only participate in an election held within the stipulated 60 days.

President Uhuru stated that they would not accept a date beyond that which was announced by the electoral body, October 17th.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) on the other hand has taken its stand and stated that there will be no election without  undertaking of structural and personnel changes at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The coalition has demanded the resignation and prosecution of Chief Executive Ezra Chiloba and five other secretariat officials.

They also want the results transmission system re-configured for transparency and for declaration of results announced at the 290 constituency tallying centers to be beamed live.

A full ruling from the Supreme Court expected by September 22nd could also have a serious impact on preparations for the fresh polls.
