IEBC Makes New Announcement as Supreme Court Delivers Full Ruling

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has postponed an earlier planned consultative meeting with presidential candidates in the October 17 elections.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the meeting scheduled for Wednesday will be held after the Supreme Court's full judgement on the NASA election petition has been delivered.

"Following consultations – and by consensus – it was agreed that the joint consultative meeting that IEBC, NASA and Jubilee were to hold this afternoon (Wednesday) at Bomas be postponed to a later date to allow the parties consider the issues from the detailed judgment by Supreme Court," read Chebukati's statement.

The Chairman further stated that the detailed ruling delivered by the Supreme Court would affect the deliberations.

"The ruling will inform discussions on preparations for the fresh poll slated for October 17," the statement read.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court judges have ruled that among other things, irregularities were found in the number of forms 34A that were provided by the commission.

The judges have also taken issue with the fact that IEBC defended the failure to transmit scanned copies of the forms on the fact that some areas were not served by 3G or 4G internet.

The courts have faulted the commission for not carefully planning for the lack of connectivity despite the fact that they had assured the public that the elections would not be affected.
