More than 15,000 former councillors from the defunct county council in Isiolo County and their supporters have vowed not to participate in the repeat presidential election if the national government fails to pay their pensions.
Speaking in Isiolo town on Wednesday, Chairman of former Councilors Forum Isiolo chapter, Hussein Abduba claimed that discussions were ongoing within the circles of former councillors to boycott the October 17 polls.
Abduba accused the National Treasury of failing to pay former civic leaders their dues even after the Senate approved their request in February 2016.
The Former Councilor claimed that most leaders were living in abject poverty and were unable to meet their financial obligations.
“Discussions are on-going nationwide under our national umbrella organisation to ensure that no former councillor or their supporters and families participate in the October presidential re-run polls unless the government meets our demands and pays us as approved by the Senate,” Abduba stated.
Abduba claimed that he personally undertook the initiative to mobilise his colleagues in Isiolo County to vote for President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August 8 polls although nobody from the party secretariat had approached him over the issue.
He pledged to mobilise his team at the grassroots to keep off from the October elections, adding that plans were underway for the national officials of the national councillors' Forum to meet in Nairobi next week to strategise over the matter.
