Why Kenya Might Hold Referendum to Push Elections Date

National Parents Association Chairman Nicholas Maiyo has stated that parents will push for a referendum so that the General Election date is moved from August to December.

Maiyo complained that having the elections conducted in August was inconveniencing the education sector and affecting learners.

He added that changes in closing dates would result into long holidays which will be a burden to parents and at the same time expose children to dangers that might force them to drop out in large numbers come January.

"It's now evident that the dates interfere with examinations and programmes including those on development," Maiyo stated.

"The changes mean children will be at home for more than two months which is quite a long period," he added.

This comes after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i announced sight changes in the national examination calendar ahead of the Presidential election set for October 26.

According to the Education CS, the change was necessitated by the fact that some schools have been gazetted as polling stations and tallying centres for the election.

Matiang'i also announced that all primary school pupils will close for the December holidays on Wednesday, October 25th while Form 1, 2 and 3 students will go on holiday on October 24th.
