Drama as 5 Men Attempt to Free Babu Owino from Jail

There was drama at the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday as five young men attempted to release Embakasi East MP Babu Owino from police custody.

The five first attempted to free Mr Owino by blocking the exit door used by accused persons to access the court.

Court officers were then forced to lead the newly-elected MP through the door used by Magistrates.

The assailants soon learnt that the court officers had chosen a different route and later moved to the gate where they chanted, calling for Babu's release.

They managed to overpower the court marshalls and freed the accused momentarily before he was recaptured.

The police officers resulted to holding Babu at the Milimani Law Court cells as his supporters followed chanting "free Babu Owino."

The five accompanied Babu Owino into the cell leading to their arrest albeit voluntarily.

Babu will now spend a second night behind bars after the High Court announced that it would give a ruling on his bond application on Wednesday.

The former University of Nairobi students' leader was charged with subversion and incitement to violence, to which he pleaded not guilty.

He was arrested on Monday for allegedly insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta at a campaign rally in Nairobi.
